Data sovereignty & self-hosted tooling

Data sovereignty is the principle that data is subject to the laws of the place it’s stored and processed — and, increasingly, that certain data must stay under an organisation’s direct control. For network teams, it raises a pointed question: where does your most sensitive operational data live?

What it is

Your device configurations, network topology, routing data and telemetry are among your most sensitive assets. Together they describe exactly how your organisation is built and where its weaknesses are. A self-hosted tool runs entirely on infrastructure you control — up to and including fully air-gapped environments with no external connectivity — so that data never leaves your boundary. The opposite model sends it to a third-party cloud service to be stored and analysed.

Why it matters

For regulated and critical-infrastructure organisations — banks, carriers, utilities, government — shipping network configuration and topology to an external cloud is often simply not permitted, and the industry is moving decisively in the same direction. Organisations are pulling sensitive workloads back under their own control for reasons of regulation, resilience and geopolitical risk. The arrival of AI sharpens the point: if an AI is going to reason over your network’s most sensitive data, sending that data to someone else’s cloud is a growing legal and risk problem.

What good looks like

The strongest position is one where both the tooling and any AI it uses run where your data already lives — on your own infrastructure, air-gap capable, with nothing leaving your network. That lets you gain modern, AI-assisted network assurance without trading away control of the very data that makes it sensitive.
